Past Participle

Past Participle:

The Past Participle (III for of the Verb). It generally ends in -ed, -d, -t, -en or -n. It represents a completed action. It is also called the Passive Participle.

  • Carried by the wind, seeds are scattered far and wide.
  • The Past Participle is used:

  • as an adjective:
  • A defeated army cannot be inspired with courage.
  • The tired traveller took rest under a tree.
  • as a subject complement.
  • She seems worried.
  • He appeared broken.
  • as an object complement.
  • We found everything messed up.
  • I will have my hair cut.
  • to combine sentences when one of them contains  a passive verb.
  • The principal entered the hall. He was accompained by his staff. (= The principal entered the hall accompained by his staff.
